A leaking vape usually shows up at the worst moment – in your pocket, on your hand, or across the car seat just as you are heading out. Why is my vape leaking from the pod or tank?
A vape leaks when e-liquid gets somewhere it should not. That usually means too much liquid is reaching the coil, air pressure inside the pod or tank is off, or a seal is no longer doing its job.
It is easy to assume the device is faulty, but that is not always the case. Many leaks happen because of everyday use. Filling too quickly, leaving the vape in a hot car, using the wrong e-liquid, or continuing with an old coil can all lead to liquid escaping through the airflow or pooling underneath the pod.
With pod systems, the problem is often condensation mixed with a small amount of e-liquid, which can look worse than it really is. With tanks and larger kits, true leaking is more likely to come from coil fitting, damaged O-rings, or liquid that is too thin for the setup.
The most common reasons your vape is leaking
The coil is loose, worn out or fitted incorrectly
This is the first thing to check. If the coil is not screwed in properly or not pushed fully into place, e-liquid can pass around it instead of through it. That liquid then collects at the base and leaks out.
Even if the coil is fitted correctly, an old coil can still cause problems. Cotton inside the coil breaks down over time, and once it stops holding liquid properly, the pod or tank can flood. When that happens, you may notice gurgling, spitback, weak flavour and liquid around the airflow.
If you have recently changed the coil and the leaking started straight away, the fit is the likely issue. If the coil has been in there for a while and performance has dropped, it may simply be time for a replacement.
You are overfilling the pod or tank
Most tanks and pods need a small air gap. Fill them too high and pressure builds up, especially once the pod is closed and fitted back into the device. That pressure can force e-liquid into the coil faster than it can be vapourised, and the excess leaks out.
This is common with refillable pod kits, especially compact models designed for convenience. It is tempting to fill right to the top, but that usually creates more mess than value.
The e-liquid is too thin for your device
Not every vape works best with every type of e-liquid. A thinner liquid, especially one with a higher PG ratio, moves more quickly through the coil and wick. In some devices that is fine. In others, it can flood the coil and leak through the airflow.
This matters most if you have switched liquid recently. If your device was working fine before and started leaking after changing flavour or brand, the VG/PG balance may be the reason. It depends on the coil too. A low-resistance coil built for higher power usually handles thicker liquid better than a small MTL pod coil.
The pod, tank or seals are damaged
A cracked pod does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it is just a hairline split near the base or around the fill port. The same goes for worn rubber seals. If an O-ring is nicked, stretched or missing, the tank loses pressure and liquid starts escaping.

Your vape is flooding from the way you inhale
This surprises a lot of people. Drawing too sharply on some pod systems can pull excess e-liquid into the coil chamber. The result is flooding, followed by gurgling and leaking.
Smaller MTL devices are usually designed for slower, gentler puffs. If you inhale too hard, especially on a fresh coil or a newly filled pod, the balance can shift and the coil gets oversaturated.
More power is not always better either. If your wattage is too low for the coil installed, the device may not vapourise liquid quickly enough, leaving excess juice inside the chamber.
Heat and pressure changes are forcing liquid out
Cyprus heat is not kind to a full tank left in a car. Warm temperatures thin the liquid and increase internal pressure, which can force e-liquid out through the airflow holes or coil head.
Pressure changes during travel can do the same thing. If your vape suddenly leaks after sitting in the sun, being carried around all day, or moving between cool air conditioning and high outdoor heat, temperature is probably involved.
That does not mean the device is bad. It means the conditions changed faster than the tank could handle.
How to stop a vape leaking
Start with the simple checks before assuming the worst. Remove the pod or tank, wipe the contacts and base, and clean away any liquid. Then check that the coil is properly installed, the pod is not cracked, and the seals are still in good condition.
If the coil looks tired, replace it. If you have overfilled the tank, empty a little liquid and reassemble it carefully. If the leak started after changing e-liquid, consider whether the liquid matches your device and coil.
It is also worth checking your filling routine. Close any airflow if your device allows it, fill slowly, avoid the centre chimney, and let a new coil sit for a few minutes before vaping. That short pause helps the wick saturate evenly instead of flooding.
When you start vaping again, take a few gentle puffs rather than pulling hard straight away. On adjustable devices, make sure your wattage suits the coil range. Too low can flood the coil, and too high can burn it – neither gives you a good result.
Why is my vape leaking even with a new coil?
A new coil does not automatically rule out leakage. In fact, leaks often show up right after a coil change because the coil is not seated properly, the tank was reassembled unevenly, or the coil was over-primed.
Adding a few drops to the cotton is fine when priming, but soaking it too heavily before installation can flood the chamber from the start. Pair that with a full tank and a few hard pulls, and you have a leak before the coil has had any chance to settle.
If a brand-new coil leaks immediately, remove it and inspect the fit. Make sure the correct coil is being used for that pod or tank as well. Even within the same brand, not every coil matches every model.
When it is time to replace parts
